Chapter Twenty Six

I wasn’t the only one of the competitors to blanch at the news of this year's theme of events. As the faeries rejoiced around us, some humans celebrating with them in complete ignorance of what the Wild Hunt meant I let the news resonate with me.

I needed to seek out Lord Elias and fast, if I was to have any hope in surviving this he would be it. Scanning the crowds I searched for him, the numerous goblin masks tricking me each time I’d thought I’d found him. The King watched on, delighting in his triumph, his blue flame eyes narrowed in on me through the sea of creatures dancing and cavorting for his majesties pleasure. His gaze was like a spotlight beaming down on me, cornering me in amongst the rabble, singling me out so his message was conveyed. I was scared and he wanted me to be. He wanted me to cower before him but I would give him no satisfaction. In the brief moment we shared, regarding each other with such malice I flipped him a rude gesture and slipped into the maze, away from prying eyes. Gathering my skirts I kicked off my heels, uncaring if I lost them in the foliage and shrubs, I needed comfort. Running barefoot into the maze, I followed the twists and turns until I was entirely lost inside myself. Before I can let out all my rage, wanting to roar in pure hatred for the faerie trying to kill me I’m silenced by strong hands reaching out of the endless tunnels of greenery.

‘There you are!’ Rhydien grabs my arm, pulling me through the trimmed hedges and into a stone arbour nestled inside the maze. In the darkness of the maze I could just make out it was him before a small scream escaped my lips.

‘It’s me! It’s me, calm down’ he hushed, the sounds of cheering echoing down the walkways, fireworks going off in the distance. I slowed my breathing, willing my panic to quell. Heart hammering against my rib cage.

‘Where did you go?’ I snap, my anxiety turning to annoyance, ‘You left me!’

‘I was trying to make sure nobody saw us; I didn’t need anyone noticing your scent on me or my… arousal near you’ he hisses.

‘Right’ I murmur, though our knack for getting into compromising situations seemed to be fated at this point. We were once again alone and hidden in the shadows, sheltered from the outside world if only for a moment. It was an inescapable conundrum, this attraction magnetised between us.

‘This can’t be coincidence you know that right?’ I finally say, breaking the tension between us and bringing us back to the problem at large, ‘he’s fucking with us, you know he’s fucking with us right-‘

‘Of course, I do!’ He snaps back, softening when he feels me shrink further into the arbours cold stone seat, ‘I mean I had a feeling this may happen, the wraith a foreshadowing to his dramatic announcement. He wants
